My favorite Hindu goddess. Normally blue or black, but I felt white looked better this time round.

Please zoom in. The beauty is in the detail.

A non-conventional Kali. Kali is supposed to be black. It's to denote the class of people that worship her ... I've been told that in Calcutta she is worship by the lower classes and light skin is considered a trait of the wealthy. And that's why she's suppose to be black or blue. So I've made her deathly pale instead. ;-) (looks scarier anyway).

Jai Ma!
To those who would say that this does not depict Kali Ma, you truly do not know the many faces of the divine Mother. She is the Mother of all, creating and preserving all. But she is also the destroyer of all. One of her first appearances in Hindu lore is as the destroyer of Raktabija, in which she is closely described as she looks in this image. She is also Smasana, living in the cremation grounds, sitting upon a corpse and surrounded by jackals.
Some people speak of western societies' influence on imagery, but your reactions to this image are just as western. Most things are not so black and/or white. They are seen from many perspectives, and none of those are necessarily wrong or right.
Thank you Dr-Benway for posting this image. If I had some extra $ I'd buy a copy, perhaps in the future. For now I will be happy being able to see it here. Please continue your fine work.
A Blessed Kali Puja and Happy Diwali to all!

Mother Kali is not a demoness as you depict her, she is a form of woman, she is fierce but she is an all loving beautiful mother. If you want to know the true essence of Maa Kali, read Ramprasad or Ramakrishna.

One man's demon is another's mother ... This is how I perceive her ... And to me she looks beautiful ... And if you look at the traditional versions of her, you'll see that besides skin colour and eye colour, there is little difference ... I've just made the illustration a bit more real. I wonder if a Thugi or a traditional Kali worshiper from the riverside of the Ganges would think this image was so off the mark. :/ Kali has many face.

She is demon slayer and mother of "all"...Your talent is good but you make her look like a zombie as is perceived in western culture. She is called "fearsome" "super-angry" and "greatest fear remover" How does a child feel about a mother who is bold and courageous than even men and is fearsome for others but lovable for the child? I hope you understand that.

I do, but to me this this her. I hope you understand that. In recent years people see her differently then she was originally seen ... In the past, she had a far less "motherly" role ... you must remember that no God or Goddess is static, the way people see him or her changes from person to person and also from time to time. The Kali that you were taught as a child is only a small aspect of her ... it's not about right and wrong ... it's about limiting. Go have a look at the Wiki page on Kali ... see how she's changed over time and also how the various areas of India see her slightly differently .... Kali has reached around the world, think about how she'll change as seen through other eyes.

I feel, to know Kali or any of Indian religion you have to understand and be Indian, not by immigration, but by upbringing. I think.

Well, I'm an Atheist, so I'm not really interested in attaining a spiritual understanding of what I consider to be a mythological character.

I dont know mythology or not, but she is loved as a mother...the feeling and purity...you people misrepresent and misunderstand her..she represents womankind's most lovable face of a mother. Even I am not religious, but I respect honest feelings.

There is a saying "Argument is anti happiness, faith is strength, love, happiness" The world sustains itself and functions on the basis of faith, is'nt it? Being a social being is having faith on some or the other social factors...either political system or religious or love etc.

Having practical faith is far different than believing something on insufficient evidence.

What is the definition of "practical"? Is it absolute, without comparision with some or the other tangible factors? Dont you dare challenge anyones faith..I dont!! Faith is not right or wrong. Better love yours(if you can manage to have) than criticising others.

I am sorry to say this but i am a hindu and i feel insulted by the way you drew that... Kali devi is a beautiful godess...beautiful but meanacing that is how she is meant to be not like a demoness! i apologize if my words are hurtful but i feel very insulted i hope you understand

I'm sorry that you feel that way. I didn't intent it to be insulting ... But I think that Kali has many faces and aspects and different people view her in different ways ... she was also seen differently in different times in history ... This is one way of viewing her ... To me this isn't ugly but beautiful ... A fearful appearance ... Fierce enough to scare away demons.

Often as follows of a particular sect or group, we don't realise that others have different ideas regarding the same deities we worship, it's a good idea to go online and see how other perceive our Gods or Goddesses.

This is exactly her. I don't know if you ever heard of Kali Yuga, but this very much seems to be her at that time. I especially like her damaged third eye. The hands (all of them) are wonderful and the whole body fits the theme very well.

Kali is black/dark blue, like the night time sky, to symbolize her incredible vastness, the fact that her body spands the heavens, her body is heaven and earth, that she encompasses all, and ultimately devours all to give birth to it's next form.

Yeah, Of course ... Seems to be various reasons why she's blue/black. Every book you read about her seems to have a different reason for her various traits. I like yours though, sounds nice.

But what I've said is true regarding class distinction in Calcutta and it seems to fit as well.
